FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
At the center of our work is Fundación Wakami, the Guatemalan nonprofit that leads all operations in rural communities. This nonprofit is supported by the Wakami Foundation, which helps grow international partnerships and bring in global resources, and by Wakami, a certified B-Corp that connects community businesses to global markets through the Wakami brand. Each plays a unique role, but together, we form one ecosystem rooted in shared purpose.
No. Neither the Wakami Foundation nor Fundación Wakami sells, produces, or profits from any products made by the artisans or sold by Wakami or other for-profit partners.
Our role is to provide training, education, and wellness programs that support women and their families. We collaborate with for-profit partners because we believe that economic sustainability is key to creating lasting impact, and access to markets is essential to achieve this.
These partnerships ensure that the businesses women lead have real opportunities to grow, while the NGO remains fully focused on empowering communities through social programs.
Fundación Wakami receives funding from international foundation grants and private donations. The Wakami Foundation also helps secure funding and build global connections that strengthen local programs.
There are many ways to join our community:
- Fuel our programs and expand opportunities by donating.
- Experience the work firsthand by joining a Travelers trip.
- Partner with us as an individual, organization, business, school, or creative ally.

Yes. Send us a message through the “Contact Us” page and we’ll be sending you all the required information.
The Travelers Program is an immersive experience that invites you to see Guatemala through our eyes and those of local communities. You’ll visit the homes of artisans, explore the land and culture, and witness our programs in action. It’s open to individuals, groups, and partners who share our values.
Yes. While the goal is to build community, the program also generates income that is directly reinvested in our programs, supporting artisans, youth, and education initiatives.
Communities reach out to us or vice versa, and we conduct a local assessment to understand their context and potential. Women then join a two-year journey to build and grow their businesses, supported every step of the way by our methodology team.
Yes. Artisans receive fair payment for every product they deliver. Payments flow through the business structures they lead and are based on the quantity of their work. Payments are made directly by for-profit partners and the artisans’ clients.
We use both data and stories to measure our impact. From educational progress and nutrition outcomes to income generation and leadership growth, we track what matters most to our communities through regular monitoring and evaluations. We also publish annual reports so you can follow the journey.
